Choose Your Own Adventure 3: Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay
You take a seat, letting your legs dangle precariously over the edge of the cliff. The dirt-covered rock here is a bit cold, but at least you’re not standing on your sore feat any more.
You pick up a small rock, and fiddle with its rough surface for a moment. Then you toss it over the edge. You hear it hit the side of the cliff, once. But after that, it is lost in the mist. You can’t tell if it hit anything else on the way down, or landed in the river you can hear rushing below.
With nothing else to do, you sit in peace, enjoying the cool morning and the lovely view of the sunbeams poking through the fog and mist. The mist. Beautiful mist over the river. You feel like you could leap into it, and float down into…
You feel a vague, creeping fear when you realize you don’t remember anything from before a few minutes ago. How long have you been sitting here? You don’t know. The first thing you can remember is tossing that stone over the edge, and before that… nothing.
Behind you, you hear a distant rumbling noise. Something rolling, crunching the ground underneath it. You feel like you should recognize the sound, but it eludes you. Looking behind you, you see some brush and scrub, which fade off into the fog. Closer than that, there’s a single wooden sign. Unfortunately, you can’t tell what’s on it — the painted side is facing away from you.
You have a moment or two to reconsider your position. You still feel a large degree of confusion, and fear at not remembering… something… but this is a pleasant place. The mist is nice.
Option 4: Give in to temptation, and jump off the cliff.
Option 5: Just stay here, resting your feet for a little while longer.
Option 6: Move away from the edge and check out the sign, but avoid the noisy thing.
Option 7: Leave the cliff and check out the sign. And try to figure out what that noise is.
